Ingredients

Seasonings used: Pizza Herbs Blend

Directions

  1. Prepare the pastry. Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C), or the temperature specified on the pastry package. Line a tray with parchment. Use pastry thawed according to its package but still cold; if it feels soft or sticky, chill briefly before shaping.
  2. Add the filling. Unroll the pastry on a lightly floured surface or its liner. Brush lightly with beaten egg, then scatter evenly with the Parmesan and Pizza Herbs Blend. Press gently so the filling sticks without flattening the pastry layers.
  3. Cut and twist. Cut into 16 equal strips, about ¾ inch wide depending on the sheet size. Hold each strip at both ends and twist several times, keeping the filling inside as much as possible. Place on the tray with space for the pastry to puff.
  4. Bake and cool. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or according to the package, until puffed, deep golden and crisp. Check the undersides as well as the tops; pale, soft pastry needs longer. Cool briefly on a rack and serve two twists per portion.

Estimated nutrition: 220 calories per serving (1/8 of the recipe). Includes listed toppings and sauces; excludes suggested accompaniments. Actual values vary with brands and portions.

Before you start

Use a sharp knife, parchment-lined baking tray and pastry brush. The stated time begins with thawed pastry; allow the package's separate thawing time.

Cooking tips

Cold pastry holds its layers and twists better. Return it to the refrigerator briefly if it becomes sticky, and bake until the bases are golden as well as the tops.

Serving ideas and variations

Serve with soup or a warm tomato dip, or add to an appetizer board. Parmesan is salty, so no extra finishing salt is needed.

Storage and reheating

Cool completely on a rack before storing airtight for up to 2 days at room temperature. Refresh briefly in a moderate oven; microwaving makes puff pastry soft.
